Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used in dogs to manage pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders.
Meloxicam works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, providing anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain-relieving), and antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects.
Pain Management:
Relieves discomfort in dogs with joint disorders, soft tissue injuries, and post-surgical pain
Commonly administered after orthopedic or soft tissue surgeries
Anti-inflammatory Effects:
Effective for managing inflammation due to arthritis, tendonitis, and other inflammatory conditions
Fever Reduction:
Used to lower fever associated with infections or inflammatory diseases
Colic Relief (Mild to Moderate):
Sometimes used as part of pain management in colic, although it's not a substitute for antispasmodics or surgery
Improved Mobility:
Helps dogs with chronic joint diseases regain movement and comfort
Bone and Joint Conditions:
Widely used in treating degenerative joint disease and cartilage inflammation
Soft Tissue Injuries and Wound Care:
Reduces swelling and pain in cases like ligament sprains, muscle strains, or cuts, promoting faster recovery
Post-Trauma Recovery:
Administered to horses recovering from trauma to control pain and inflammation (off-label use in veterinary practice)
Respiratory Conditions:
Occasionally used as part of a broader treatment plan for pleuritis or lower respiratory tract infections
Surgical Pain Control:
Routinely given before and after surgeries, including colic operations, to manage pain and minimize inflammation
Dogs (primary use)
Occasionally used in horses and other animals as prescribed by a veterinarian
